The port of Tórshavn has become a member of EPI (Environmental Port Index)

The Port of Tórshavn has become a member of the international network EPI – Environmental Port Index. This is an important tool for developing the Port of Tórshavn and the municipality of Tórshavn in a sustainable way, particularly with a focus on the cruise industry.

In September 2023, the Port of Tórshavn invited key stakeholders from the Faroese cruise industry to an informational meeting about EPI at Hotel Hafnia.

During the meeting, Even Husby, CEO of EPI, provided a detailed explanation of the system as a working tool and its importance for the port and the host city. Additionally, Jon Olav Stedje from Flåm Port in Norway shared their experiences with EPI. Among the attendees were representatives from other Faroese ports, politicians, agents, Visit Tórshavn, and Visit Faroe Islands.

The Port of Tórshavn joining EPI is beneficial both for the port and for the municipality of Tórshavn as a travel destination. Hanus Mikkelsen, CEO of the Port of Tórshavn, states:
“We look forward using the insights from EPI to develop a greener, more responsible cruise industry. This will position Tórshavn as an excellent travel destination and a pioneering port in sustainability.”

In 2024, the Port of Tórshavn will begin collecting data and measuring how visitors from cruise ships impact the environment through the EPI system.

Currently, more than tihirty Nordic ports are a part of EPI, with the Port of Tórshavn being the only Faroese port in the network so far.
